Siófok – Not as bad as it seemed

Siofok

If you missed the details of our painful journey to get to Siófok, you can read all about it here.

Day 5 Cont’d (plus Days 6, 7 and 8 too)

If you’ve been following along up to this point, you’ll know that by now we had travelled all day, been on the same bus several times and were now ravenously hungry. We needed to get straight on to the task of tracking down some food. Continue reading “Siófok – Not as bad as it seemed”

Stop 1- Budapest – Part 2

Heroes Square

See what we got up to on our first few days of travel here, otherwise read on…

-day 3

We awoke on our second full day in Budapest, still slightly sore and tired from the day before. This was in no small part due to two factors: one, the paper thin walls that surround the rooms of our hostel and two, that they had chosen to house a walrus with sleep apnoea there alongside side us. And so, it begins…

gap year travel

After all the planning, all the saving, all the frantic preparations – Cath and I are finally departing for our year of travelling the world.
Four continents, thirteen countries, innumerable bouts of diarrhoea all begins now with a short drive to Heathrow Airport and a final farewell to our families.

The last few weeks have been fairly hectic. In the 14 days preceding our departure we have; both quit our jobs, moved out of our rented home, given 80% of our worldly possessions to charity, poured everything we have left into two rucksacks, had six leaving do’s, said goodbye to countless friends and loved-ones, drunk 10,000 alcoholic beverages, spent 72 hours repeatedly checking the whereabouts of our passports and had zero restful nights sleep… and that was the calm before the storm.

For so long it felt as though this was some distant event, barely visible on the horizon, certainly nothing to worry about, I mean it was forever away. But every time we turned our backs, it crept a little closer. Every time we made some tiny step towards readying for it, it got a little more real and before we knew it here we were – no home, no jobs and no idea how this all happened.

Our families have helped immeasurably in getting us to this point. They’ve encouraged us when others might have tried to swing us round to a more conventional or “sensible” way to spend 18 months worth of savings. Instead of that, we’re off to chase our dreams – something that I believe, if possible, everyone should have the opportunity to do.
So a big thanks to you, Reilly’s and McCartney’s, without you we wouldn’t be here… wherever the fuck that is…

So all that remains is for us to get going, first stop Budapest on a five week tour of Europe that is sure to be fine preparation for the 11 months of continent-hopping that’s to follow.

Thanks for reading and we hope that you’ll follow us and our adventures here on the blog.

Our Trip to Switzerland – What happens in Basel, stays in Basel

Switzerland

This is the (much/slightly) anticipated part 2 of our trip to Switzerland blog in which we cover the history of Basel. It’s been quite a while since the last post so, if you want to get up to speed, you can read part 1 here.

When we’re starting out on a journey into a new city or area, I always like to try and find out a little bit about the history of the place to get an idea of what makes it tick and possibly, guide us into some interesting locations that we otherwise may not have found. Stalking Cath and Pete: A How to Guide

With just 4 short months left until we board our first flight, of what will be  many over the coming year, we thought it would be good to give an update on what we’re up to travel planning wise.
But before I jump headlong in to the details of what we have and haven’t booked, now would probably be a good time to discuss the route we plan to take, so that when I do eventually begin the endless babble about plane tickets, sleeper trains and hostel dorms, at least there will be some context around it.

Our Trip to Switzerland – Part 1

Switzerland

Birthdays are a difficult time in our house. I say birthdays, but what I really mean is my birthday and when I say they’re difficult, what I specifically mean is that they’re difficult for Cath. She has the unenviable task of working out what I might want when even I haven’t the slightest idea of what that is.
Whenever I’m asked by anyone what I’d like for birthdays, Christmas’, breakfasts’ or any other event that requires me to give others a window into my desires, I simply adopt a bemused look before shrugging my shoulders and uttering a distinctly unhelpful “I don’t know”.
