And so, our next destination would be the land-locked nation of Laos, situated right at the heart of South-East Asia. A surprising number of people that I talk to have never even heard of it, let alone knew it was a country worth visiting. This is all the more astounding when you consider that Laos is not some tiny back water. Laos is bigger than both Greece and Austria and has borders with 5 other nations, including China. Chiang Rai – The Forgotten City
If you missed our trip to Central Thailand, you can see what we got up to here.
It was time to head even further North to Chiang Mai’s weirdly similarly named sister town of Chiang Rai. Bidding farewell to our host Allen, we hailed a Grab (Asia’s version of Uber) and were soon sat in the bus station waiting for our journey to begin. Continue reading “Chiang Rai – The Forgotten City”
Central Thailand – Ayutthaya and Chiang Mai
If you missed our trip to Bangkok, you can find the last blog post here.
The next day we woke up in plenty of time to get to the travel agency, where we would be picked up and taken to the bus stop for our journey to Ayutthaya. Due to our fragile state, however, we decided to stop for a cooked breakfast at a small bar just down the road from the hostel. This act delayed us to such an extent that we were soon sprinting down Khao San Road as fast as we could under the heavy burden of our backpacks. We arrived, panting, into the travel agents with a minute to spare and collapsed into the chairs inside. We needn’t have bothered. All departure times in Thailand, we were to find out, are very much approximate. Continue reading “Central Thailand – Ayutthaya and Chiang Mai”
Bangkok – Our 1st stop in South East Asia
If you missed out on our final stop in Europe before heading to Bangkok, you can find out what we got up to in Dubrovnik here.
Our journey to Bangkok would be a long one. Having been dropped off at the airport at 6am, we would endure a 2 hour flight to Istanbul, a mammoth 13 hour layover in Ataturk airport and a 9 hour flight into Suvarnabhumi. All that would be capped off by an hour long taxi ride to our Hostel – Lub D Silom, a short distance from Lumphini Park in the east of the city. Continue reading “Bangkok – Our 1st stop in South East Asia”
Dubrovnik – Dragon’s Den
If you missed out on our trip to Split, you can catch up here.
After a nice period of rest in Split, it was time to hit the road again and set off for Dubrovnik. We got an early morning Uber to the bus station and boarded the bus for Dubrovnik. This journey would not only get us to a city which we had both dreamt of visiting for years, but also add another country to our already growing list. Continue reading “Dubrovnik – Dragon’s Den”
Pete and Cath do the Splits!
If you missed our last post about Plitvice National Park, Korenica and our innate ability to wander into international incidents, you can get up to date here.
A mere 4 hours bus journey from Plitvice, on the Dalmatian coast, lies the city of Split. Croatia’s 2nd largest city, Split’s history began way back in the fourth century when Roman emporer Dioclesian decided to build his retirement palace there. This palace now forms the heart of Split Old Town, a labyrinthine maze of alleys and passageways that cry out to be investigated. This would be the location of our next and penultimate stop in Europe. Continue reading “Pete and Cath do the Splits!”
Plitvice National Park – Don’t go chasing waterfalls
If you need to catch up on our pre-Plitvice adventures, you can see what we got up to in Ljubljana here.
The next morning it was time, once again, to hit the road. Sergey, our very helpful host, gave us a lift to the bus stop and we boarded our bus to Zagreb. We would only be paying a flying visit however, as our final destination was another 3 hours south by bus, the town of Korenica. Continue reading “Plitvice National Park – Don’t go chasing waterfalls”
Lovely Jubbly Ljubljana
If you haven’t had the chance to read about our stay in Tolmin, you can read all about it here.
We left Tolmin via the same means by which we arrived, getting a bus back to Most na Soci and a train through Bled. This time though we carried on to the end of the line at Jesenice before changing platforms and boarding the train heading for Ljubljana. Continue reading “Lovely Jubbly Ljubljana”
Tolmin tide waits for Nowhereman
If you’ve missed out on our last blog post about Lake Bled, you can find it here.
The next morning we got a taxi to Bled Jezera train station and set off for Tolmin, a small town hidden among the hills that make up the Soca Valley. The train was not hi-tech or pretty but moved at an impressive rate and was astonishingly cheap. Continue reading “Tolmin tide waits for Nowhereman”
